Hanifaru Bay Manta Season: A Local's Guide from Dharavandhoo

Hanifaru Bay is one of the most extraordinary places on earth to get in the water - and we are lucky enough to call the island next to it home. Every year, when the tides and currents are right, hundreds of reef manta rays gather here to feed on dense clouds of plankton, sometimes joined by whale sharks. As guesthouse hosts on Dharavandhoo, we watch the season turn from our doorstep, and we want to help you experience it the right way.

Hanifaru Bay sits inside Baa Atoll, the only UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in the Maldives, and it is a strictly protected Marine Protected Area. It is roughly 1.9 kilometres from Dharavandhoo - a short boat ride - which is what makes our island such an ideal and affordable base compared with the distant resorts.

So when should you come? Manta season at Hanifaru Bay runs roughly from May to November, during the southwest monsoon. The biggest gatherings tend to happen around the new moon and the full moon, when stronger tidal currents trap the most plankton in the bay. No two days are the same, which is why we keep a close eye on conditions and take guests out when the mantas are actually in.

A few important things to know before you go. Hanifaru Bay is snorkelling only - scuba diving is not permitted, to protect the animals. Visits are managed by rangers and are time-limited, so a calm, respectful approach matters. You will want a mask, snorkel and fins, reef-safe sunscreen, and a waterproof camera if you have one. Strong swimming is helpful, as there can be current.

What can you expect to see? On a good day, you may find yourself surrounded by manta rays looping and barrel-rolling through the shallows just below the surface - an unforgettable, slightly dizzying ballet of giants. Whale sharks, the largest fish in the ocean, sometimes cruise through too. Even on quieter days, the snorkelling around Dharavandhoo's reefs and Dharavandhoo Thila is spectacular.

The best way to make the most of manta season is to stay close and stay flexible. Because we are local, we can move quickly when word comes that the mantas are gathering - something resorts on far-off islands simply cannot match. We can also pair your Hanifaru trip with island excursions, fishing, sandbank picnics and sunset cruises.

If you are dreaming of swimming with manta rays in the Maldives, come stay with us on Dharavandhoo and let your local hosts show you the bay we love. Message us any time to check the season and plan your trip.
